Treasuring and protecting our biodiversity

I’m so happy to show this mini-series of local wildlife native to Trinidad and Tobago and the tremendous work being done by the El Soccoro Centre for Wildlife Conservation.

Our environment is under attack now, more than ever. With more land being used for industry, agriculture and housing, habitats of native species are under threat.

A planned highway in north-east Trinidad will be constructed just a few hundreds of metres away from a protected reserve, called the Aripo Savannas. Aside from being a home for the protected ocelot (small feline species), the reserve was recognised since the 1970s for unique species, some of which may even have medicinal properties.

It’s almost impossible not to be concerned about environmental issues living in Trinidad and Tobago, a maritime state with precious ecosystems such as our forests, wetlands and marine biodiversity.

I’m happy to have taken part in this series which hopefully can educate people a bit more about our native wildlife.
